History of the city
Menzel El Habib boasts a rich history deeply rooted in the steppes and the Tunisian South. Throughout the ages, it served as a strategic settlement point and a vital corridor between the Gabès region and the interior of Tunisia. Historically, the area developed as a settlement center for groups and clans relying on agriculture, livestock breeding, and the exploitation of vast pastures. It also gained prominence during the French protectorate due to its strategic location connecting Gabès and Gafsa, making it a hub for national movement activity and the active participation of its residents in the popular resistance.
Following independence, the region experienced a major turning point in its modern history: the delegation of Menzel El Habib was officially created in 1983 by order of President Habib Bourguiba (under Decree No. 316 dated March 10, 1983). The area thus transitioned from a traditional demographic and tribal grouping into an organized delegation belonging to the Gabès Governorate. This administrative decision helped bring local government closer to residents and spurred development and infrastructure projects, while preserving the region's authentic cultural and social heritage.
